Aceh, Sumatra's northernmost province, is known for its unique coffee terroir, characterized by isolated heirloom cultivars and fertile microclimates. This mountainous territory, surrounding Lake Laut Tawar and the town of Takengon, is considered the epicenter of Aceh's coffee production. PT Ketiara, founded in 2009 by Ms Rahmah, is a notable umbrella group in this region. Ms. Rahmah, who started out as a local cherry collector over 20 years ago, has become one of Indonesia's most respected coffee entrepreneurs. Despite the male-dominated and conservative nature of the Sumatran coffee industry, Ms Rahmah has established herself as a leader, bringing gender diversity and talent to the fore in her business. The original cooperative was Fair Trade certified in 2011, and has grown from 38 to almost 2000 producer members.
One of the new business units under PT Ketiara is Ratu Ketiara Gayo (RKG), a women's cooperative established in 2017. RKG is co-led by three young protégés of Ms. Rahmah: Ms. Indayana, Ms. Dini and Ms. Murul Kemala. The cooperative represents a young generation of farmers, with 80% of its 971 members being women, all focused on producing high-quality coffee. Together, RKG members cultivate a total of 1234 hectares of coffee, contributing to the region's reputation for exceptional coffee.
process
The cherries are processed to remove pulp and skin. The coffee beans are then sun-dried on tables for several days, with constant supervision.
