THE PRODUCER

Mahembe Murundo is a traditional washed coffee from Nyamasheke, Rwanda, produced by 400 farmers in association with the Kivubelt Murundo washing station in Furaha Umwizeye. The district of Nyamasheke, in Rwanda, is blessed with exceptional terroir. The cool, humid climates of Lake Kivu and Nyungwe Forest National Park keep groundwater abundant. Kivu itself is part of the East African rift whose constant drift creates volcanic seepage at the bottom of the lake and enriches the surrounding soils.

Coffees from this region are often more vibrant and fruity. They are heavier than those in the rest of the country. Under the leadership of Furaha Umwizey, Kivubelt planted 90,000 coffee trees on the estates, which now employ more than 400 people and constitute a sort of professional coffee school for locals wishing to improve their agricultural activities.

The history of coffee in Rwanda is a complicated tale, both tragic and triumphant. Commercial Arabica coffee cultivation was introduced to the region under German colonial rule in 1905. After World War I, the Belgians replaced the Germans, and in 1927 they began to “vigorously promote coffee production.” Fortunately, after almost half a century later, civil war broke out and gave Rwanda independence. Coffee then became the country's main source of income.

TREATMENT

These grains of Bourbon native to Rwanda gathered by 400 producers supported by Kivubelt Murundo were transformed naturally. That is to say, they underwent the traditional and ancestral process used for centuries, even a millennium!

PROFILE AND BOTANICAL VARIETY

In general, Rwanda's cafes are like the southern version of Kenyans. You will find notes of black tea, citrus (usually orange or lemon), a touch of sweetness (sugar, honey, caramel) with soft and rounded contours, in addition to a silky body. It is a combination of both familiar and unique characteristics. The Mahembe Murundo is a magnificent representation of Rwanda and its beauty as a big, proud country!
