THE PRODUCERS
Gondo and its sister car washes are in a unique region of Kenya. The western county of Muranga lies at the foot of the Aberdare mountain range, on lush red volcanic soil ideal for producing some of Kenya's finest coffee. Muranga is a county which lies to the south of the most famous coffee regions of the Central Province of Kenya, Nyeri, Kirinyaga and Embu, located to the north. The Aberdare range exerts a significant climatic influence on this part of Muranga, keeping the vegetation cooler and well breathed.
Each of the 727 farmers in these fertile foothills owns an average of 250 coffee trees and plots of half an acre per family. The Gondo processing plant, or “factory” as it is known in Kenya, is one of three sites managed by the New Kiriti Farmers' Cooperative Society (FCS), an organization that centralizes management and relations.
TREATMENT
The abundance of water in the central growing regions has always allowed stations to wash, and wash, and steep, and re-wash their coffees entirely with fresh, cold river water. Environmental conservation is only emerging in some places (in drier areas where water is scarce, due to climate change), but for the most part Kenya still washes and steeps its coffees following the tradition. In Gondo, the cherries are sorted by hand, their density is controlled by flotation before being admitted and pulped every day. After the coffee is washed, it is steeped in cool water for large periods of time in order to stop the fermentation of the sugar and clean the parchment. The coffee is then dehydrated for two weeks on raised beds to ensure good air circulation and optimal temperature control.
PROFILE AND BOTANICAL VARIETY
Although there are many citrus notes in this blend
