THE PRODUCER

Desalegn Abebe Adela, a 45-year-old coffee farmer and father of five, owns 1.54 hectares of coffee production in Kébélé Tulu Gola, Nansebo Woreda, located in West Arsi Zone, Oromia Region of Ethiopia . He mainly grows the 74112 coffee variety which he processes into dry natural coffee. Inspired by other participants from his region who won awards at the Ethiopian Cup of Excellence in recent years, Desalegn decided to enter this competition for the best coffee also in 2021. Since then, he has gradually climbed the ranks from no winning entry in 2021 in 21st place this year with his natural 74112 rated at 88.06 points! “I was disappointed that I didn't get that far last year. I’m happy to hear that I’m in the top 40 this year,” he said. It's a great victory for Desalegn and only time will tell if one day he and his farm will be crowned champion of Ethiopia.

TREATMENT

This coffee was transformed in a natural way due to the arid climate of its environment.

PROFILE AND BOTANICAL VARIETY

Variety 74112 was developed in the 1970s at the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) for its resistance to coffee berry disease. It begins with the numbers 74 to indicate that it was selected and cataloged in 1974. 74112 is native to the Metu-Bishari forest near Bishari village, Metu province, Illuababora zone, Oromia region in Ethiopia and was registered in 1979 for its remarkable disease resistance and high yield potential. It is a small, fairly compact coffee tree that grows well in climates similar to where the original parent trees grew.

Desalegn 88 offers a complex and sweet cup. It first begins with the note of peach and plum which then transforms into a tea with explosive flavors of berries and flowers. Find a pinch of cinnamon, sugar and chocolate in the aftertaste with a citrus zest tartness that is a classic Ethiopian note.
